I coudn't help but revisit this case the tragic story of Salome, a young woman who was killed by her boyfriend. It is a case in mind whenever we need to bring attention to the devastating consequences of toxic relationships and gender-based violence in Nigeria.
The perpetrator, when confronted about his actions, offered the justification that he and his partner "don't have each other all the time." Is this enough to take another person's life?
This heartbreaking event underscores the urgent need to address the systemic issues that place women and girls at risk simply because they are female. We urgently need to collectively challenge these patterns of abuse and start putting stringent measures in place towards a future where every girl and woman can live in safety, dignity, and peace.
How can we better support one another in recognizing and avoiding these dangerous situations?
