In commemoration of the 'Menstrual Hygiene day,' It imperative to also highlight the issue of period poverty in Nigeria. This problem faced by a large number of school girls especially teenagers, represents more than a simple hygiene issue; it significantly hinders the educational and economic opportunities available to girls in Nigeria. Whether in urban slums or rural areas, millions of adolescent girls face the difficult choice each month between purchasing food and sanitary products. With the rising cost of living, menstrual hygiene products have shifted from essentials to prohibitively expensive luxuries.
Ruth, a 14-year-old girl who lives in a remote community in Nasarawa State, shared the story of how she often misses classes each month because her parents are unable to get her sanitary products. Her inability to overcome the trauma caused by having constant stains from using fabrics during such days makes it even worse for her to seek alternatives anymore. "So I'd rather stay at home if there are no menstrual pads," she says.
Just like Ruth, the impact of period poverty is severe. Each school year, menstruation causes girls to miss as much as a month of classes, leading to setbacks in their studies, diminished self-confidence, and sometimes school dropout. Girls who rely on improvised materials such as rags, leaves, or newspaper expose themselves to dangerous reproductive tract infections.
Addressing this issue demands a comprehensive strategy. Primarily, dismantling the deep-rooted stigma and shame around menstruation is crucial—menstruation is a natural bodily function, not a source of disgrace. Additionally, educational institutions must be provided with sufficient restroom facilities, access to running water, and emergency sanitary supplies.
Moreover, community programs such as the one we do at SACHEM, should focus on teaching girls how to produce and care for reusable, eco-friendly cloth pads. Guaranteeing that girls can manage their periods with respect and dignity enables them to continue their education and opens doors to brighter prospects.
"No girl deserves to suffer each month for simply answering the call of Mother Nature."
